What is character set encoding?

Character set encoding is used to display and save special or unique characters on a website. A character set is necessary because of the many different languages worldwide, each with their own unique characters, and computers use character set encoding to maintain compatibility of these languages across the different systems.

It's recommended to send along a characteristic (charset HTTP header) with every web page, in which the character encoding of the text is specified. The browser of the online visitor reads this charset coding and decodes the text on the page according to that character set.
