Why is character set encoding important?

Character set encoding is important because otherwise the web browser of the visitor cannot interpret the content of the page. If the character set isn't specified, it's possible that not all characters on a page a displayed correctly. This results in decreased readability of a web page.

In addition, an incorrectly specified character set can cause problems when saving the characters in a database. It is recommended to save the characters in a uniform fashion when saving to a database, for example by first converting to a generally accepted character set (such as UTF-8). However, in order to achieve this it must first be clear in which character set the input was first drafted, before conversion to a uniform character set can take place.
